Hi! I'm Cara Michelle Smith — a journalist and comedy writer living in New York. I don't typically lead with those things when meeting new people, but they tend to be what folks come here for.

Right now, I'm a senior writer at Salon Magazine, where I write a weekly humor column on the woes of life under capitalism, in addition to commentary and news analyses on money, power and the economy. Before that, I spent a decade in financial journalism, reporting on real estate and personal finance for the Houston Business Journal, NerdWallet, and syndicated in MarketWatch, Yahoo! Finance, Nasdaq.com and others outlets.

My satire's been published in The New Yorker, McSweeney's, The Onion, Reductress and other outlets. Outside of that, you can find me performing standup and storytelling around the city — the latter of which I've done  The Moth! — or running late for a luxurious engagement, which may or may not entail collaging on the couch while my dog farts nearby. ​
